Computer & Online Safety Measures

  • Follow the personal computer safety recommendations:
    • Always lock your computer if you’re leaving it.
    • Set up an automated lockout after 5 minutes of inactivity.
    • Always turn off your computer when you have finished using it.
  • Do not access your account from public computers. If you must use one, follow these public computer safety recommendations:
    • Use the virtual keyboard at the login to avoid having your keystrokes captured
    • Always log out after accessing your account
    • Never leave the computer unattended while logged in
    • Clear the browser cache after logoff
  • Do not share files unless necessary. Disable the Windows file and printer sharing features if possible. If you decide to use these, make sure that you configure the access permissions with strong passwords, and only share them with specific users.
  • Turn on your pop-up blocker and set the filter to the highest possible level. Add the LYNX website to your list of “trusted” sites either permanently or temporarily while using the site.
  • Regularly check for security updates and patches for your operating system and make sure your browser is up to date.
  • Delete e-mails that don’t originate from a trusted source as they may contain harmful attachments or links. Disable the “preview pane” in your e-mail system as this function may allow malicious code to be executed even if an e-mail remains unopened.
