Statistics

  • Cumulative Return: The cumulative return does not show realised gains and losses, it only shows the performance of your portfolio. When a loss is realized, and subsequent deposits are made, future gains are given less weight in relation to the overall portfolio value. As a result, calculating cumulative return over extended periods with deposits and withdrawals can be complex. It’s essential to understand that cumulative return is determined by a consistent mathematical formula and offers insights into long-term performance.
  • Net profit: The sum of all realised profits in the selected period.
  • Max. drawdown: A drawdown is measured from the time a retrenchment begins to when a new high is reached.
  • Peak-To-Valley: Timespan of the maximum drawdown.
  • Recovery: The time needed to recover from the maximum drawdown. If the value is displayed within parentheses, it indicates that the recovery is still ongoing at the end of the selected period.
  • Starting NAV: Net asset value at the beginning of the selected period.
  • Ending NAV: Net asset value at the end of the selected period.
  • Deposits And Withdrawals: This value represents the difference between deposits and withdrawals made during the selected period.

To calculate the cumulative return ratio over a given time period, the performance period is divided into sub-periods whenever a cash flow occurs. Here’s the formula used to calculate the return ratio for each sub-period:

RN = [Ending Market Value (EMV) / (Beginning Market Value (BMV) + Cash Flow (CF))] – 1

The final cumulative return ratio is then calculated by geometrically linking all the sub-periods:

Cumulative return ratio = [(1 + RN1) x (1 + RN2) x … x (1 + RNn) – 1] x 100

This method provides an accurate representation of cumulative returns over time.

Example:
Calculation of cumulative return ratio for the period 1.05-25.7 2023 with cash flows occurring on 25.05, 08.07 and 25.07.:

DateBeginning Market ValueEnding Market ValueCash FlowReturn
1/05/2023100.000 EUR110.000 EUR010,00%
25/05/2023110.000 EUR82.000 EUR-25.000 EUR-3,53%
21/06/202382.000 EUR87.000 EUR06,10%
8/07/202387.000 EUR102.000 EUR12.000 EUR3,03%
25/07/2023102.000 EUR105.000 EUR500 EUR2,44%

Final cumulative return ratio calculation:
[(1+10%) x (1 – 3,53%) x (1+6,1%) x (1+3,03%) x (1+2,44%)] – 1 = 18,83%.
